ALBANIA-The Land of Eagles
8 days/7 night – airplane/ bus transportation
Day 1 Brussels – Tirana
Gathering of the group at “Nena Tereza” airport in Tirana at 06:15 pm. After passing through customs and passport control, transfer to hotel in Tirana. Accommodation in hotel, dinner and relaxing walk through Tirana downtown and famous Bllok neighborhood . Overnight.
Day 2 Tirana – Kruja – Durres (38km + 46km)
Breakfast. Going for Tirana city tour with a guide: National Museum, Etem Beg Mosque, Orthodox Church and Catholic cathedral, Skenderbeg’s square. Continue the journey to Kruja, the capital of the first autonomous Albanian state in the middle ages , which became well known by father of Albanian nation, the famous hero – Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeg. Visiting the fortress of Kruja with its breath taking view, museum dedicated to Skenderbeg and old bazaar with many handcraft shops. Lunch in restaurant in Kruja. Going to Durres, accommodation in hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3 Durres – Shkodra – Durres (107km+107km)
Breakfast. Short walk and introduction to downtown Durres, city established in year 627 with its Roman Amphitheater (2nd century ac, founded in 1966. by Italian archeologist) the biggest in the Balkans, Venetian tower and sea port. Continue the journey to Shkodra, beautiful city in Northern Albania. On the way to Shkodra stopping in Fishta village and having lunch in famous Albanian restaurant with traditional food. In Shkodra, first thing to visit is Rosafa castle with small museum inside it. There is a legend connected to this fortress which all the Balkan nations know well. Listening to the legend and enjoying the view from the castle to three rivers surrounding Shkodra ( River Buna, Drin and Kiri) and Shkodra lake will stay in your memory forever. Going back to Durres. Dinner. Overnight.
Day 4 Durres– Apollonia – Berat (97km + 70km)
Breakfast. On the way to Berat, visiting of Apollonia, one of the two most important ancient Ilyrians colonial settlements in present day in Albania, situated 12 km away from city of Fier. According to archaeological investigations for 100 years Greek and Illyrian have lived in separate communities here. Under the Roman Empire, Apollonia remained a prosperous center till strong earthquake in 3rd century AC happen. You will be witness to history on this ancient place. Continue of the journey to Berat, the ancient city in the heart of Albania well known for it’s fortress and many orthodox churches from the middle ages. The old neighborhood in the heart of Berat, called Mangalem, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List (http://www.unesco.al/berati-gjirokastra). Accommodation in a hotel and lunch. Afternoon visit the castle of Berat, which is used to be called the “City of 1000 windows“ or “Museum city”. Free time for walk and dinner. Overnight.
Day 5 Berat– Gjirokastra – Blue Eye – Saranda (171km+37km+21km)
Breakfast. Continue of the journey to Gjirokastra. Old town of Gjirokastra has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 2005 (http://www.unesco.al/berati-gjirokastra). It is known as the Silver city and it is a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town. Its castle looks upon the Drina river valley and Gjere mountains and the view is breath- taking. In Gjirokastra there is Ethnographic Museum located in the birth house of the disreputable communist leader, who held Albania in deep isolation, Enver Hoxha. Lunch in one of Gjirokastra’s taverns, where you can enjoy cuisine of Southern Albania region. Drive to Saranda. On the way to Saranda, visit of the Blue Eye, natural phenomenon, a water spring and the water source of the Bistrica River. Accommodation in hotel in Saranda, dinner and overnight.
Day 6 Saranda – Butrint – Saranda (18km + 18km)
Breakfast. Going for a visit to Butrint, an ancient Greek and Roman city in Epirus. In 2000 the National Park of Butrint was established and became part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List (http://www.unesco.al/butrinti). Lunch in one restaurant near Butrint. Going back to Saranda. Free time. In the evening “Albanian night” will be organized in a restaurant inside the Fortress of Lekursit with a beautiful view over Saranda city by night. Overnight.
Day 7 Saranda – Himara – Vlora (53km + 73km)
Breakfast. Starting the journey to Himara, the pearl located in Southern part of Albanian Riviera. During the way we will pass breath-taking beaches and untouched Ionian cost. Continue journey to Vlora, second big port of Albania, accommodation in hotel and lunch and short rest. Afternoon visit of Vlora sights: National museum where Albanian flag was raised for the first time in 1912, Old Catholic Church, City hall… Free evening. Overnight.
Day 8 Valona – Tirana – Brussels (145km)
Breakfast. Transfer to airport in Tirana. Fly for Brussels at 12:15 pm.
